Green Acres is the Place to Be ...
June 1, 2008 – near Orvieto, Italy
Leaving Florence our bus traveled south through Tuscany on the A1, the fast, modern autostrada. As we crossed over into a corner of Umbria, our guide told us of a stop we were to make at an agriturismo in the hills outside Orievto. The Poggio della Volara is a working farm growing olives and wine grapes. It was here that we had a most memorable home-prepared luncheon and wine tasting prepared by Marco, the proprietor, and his mom.
Tim: Oh what a buffet. I really loved Marco's mom's 'Tuscan Cream' chicken liver patè on crostini. Cheeses and meats complimented the three superb regional wines. Now I love reds, but those Orvieto whites, made in part from Marco's grapes, were the very best. I'm sure glad I wasn't driving the rest of the way—I had three glasses!
Lois: Yes, the food was terrific. I toured his guest rooms and pool while you took pictures outside. I want to go back and stay a week ... no two.
Back on the bus, everyone. BUDDY CHECK! Okay, who did we leave behind?
Next stop, Rome.
