About This Site

This website was created in its entirety by Tim (that's me) and Lois Kilby to highlight our 2008 trip to Italy. I currently work as a web applications designer in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Lois is semi-retired from public school teaching. We had as much fun assembling the pictures and sounds for this scrapbook as we did on our trip. (Well, not really, the trip was just too much fun.)

With only a few minor exceptions, photos were made by Lois and me. For those so interested, I used a pocket-size Nikon Coolpix S51c point-and-shoot camera.

360° Panoramas

The panoramas were fun to make and even more fun to now explore. I used the same Nikon camera to take the dozen or so shots that went into making each panoramas. I would stand in a spot, take one photo, pivot around so that the next photo overlapped the previous one, and do this until I had gone all the way around. The panorama from the top of the Duomo in Florence was special only in that one can't stand in a single spot and turn around to see in all directions—you have to walk around the center structure. I got lucky that all the shots fit together into this magical, bird's-eye view of the city. Back home I use simple photo merge software to stitch the sets of photos together into a single, long photos that can then be displayed as interactive Flash content. Cool, huh?

Sounds

Europe is a treat for all the senses, not the least the tastes, the smells, and the sounds. I wanted to remember the sounds just as much as the sights, so I took along a miniature recorder to capture a few for our scrapbook. You can hear a few of these attached to photos of the respective locations. Close your eyes and let the sounds carry you off to exciting locales.
